Companion Courses

CHEM 1503 and CHEM 1523 are Open Learning companion courses in first year undergraduate chemistry theory. CHEM 1503 is the first half and covers chemical bonding and organic chemistry. This course, CHEM 1523, is the second half and comprises of gas laws, kinetics, equilibrium, acids/bases, solubility, thermodynamics, and electrochemistry. The on-campus counterparts of CHEM 1503 and CHEM 1523 are CHEM 1500 and CHEM 1520, respectively.

There is also a laboratory component. The Open Learning laboratory course for CHEM 1503 is CHEM 1505 and for CHEM 1523 is CHEM 1525. Both laboratory courses CHEM 1505 and CHEM 1525 are only available for registration to students residing in Canada. CHEM 1523 and CHEM 1525 together provides the equivalent of the second half of a first year university chemistry course.

Note: In order to complete the equivalent of the entire first year (6 credits) of university-level chemistry students need to complete CHEM 1503, 1523, 1505 and 1525 or CHEM 1500 and CHEM 1520.

For transfer credit, students may need to take both CHEM 1523 and CHEM 1525.
